Celebrating 24 Years!

Congratulations to the Kent Denver Student Credit Union

In 1984, Kent Denver School math teacher Donna Duvall-Serrano was instrumental in establishing one of the nation's first student-run credit unions. With the support of the school, its students and the Lowry Federal Credit Union, what would become the nation's largest student-run credit union opened its doors.

Much has changed during that time-and much has been accomplished. The Credit Union has grown to over $2 million in assets offering a full line of financial services to its students, faculty and families. The former Lowry Federal Credit Union changed its name to Gateway Credit Union, now a partner in the new Westerra Credit Union.

As a branch of Westerra, students apply for approximately 20 positions each year to operate the Credit Union, helping other students learn financial responsibility. Students leading the student credit union this year include President David Hanley and Vice Presidents Kyle Perlmutter-Operations, Haley Sorensen-Internal Statistics, Matt Schovee-Finance, Alex Kettering-Marketing and Arianna Gerdes-Teller Supervision.

Donna Duvall-Serrano, who has led the credit union through 24 successful years, announced her retirement for the end of the school year. At the Westerra Credit Union Annual Meeting March 6, President/CEO C. Alan Peppers and Board Member Ed Campbell (a former teacher at Kent Denver School), honored Duvall-Serrano for her dedication and commitment to financial literacy and the students at the school, noting her nationally-renowned accomplishments.

To ensure the continued success of the student-run credit union after her retirement, Duvall-Serrano has been working side-by-side with Tracy Wittmer, who will succeed her as Branch Manager. The Credit Union expresses its appreciation and gratitude to Duvall-Serrano and all who have helped make this branch a reality-and for those who will continue in the years ahead.
